Al Shami – The Name

The Old Shami Home, referring to the old houses in the Levant, particularly in Damascus Syria, is considered as one of the greatest architectural and civilizational achievements. Through time the characteristics of this ancient home has been deeply ingrained into society in the Levant area. The history of old Damascan homes go back to the 16th and 17th century where it is still existing in many areas of Damascus and extending to be more than just a place to live in. The Shami home carries many of the old cultures and ways of life to today’s modern day society.

Al Baraani, Al Juwaani, Al Dihleez and Al Liwan are common vocabulary that describe the different areas of an Old Shami Home. This vocabulary not only describes the place but also carries with it many meanings that serve to remind us of the beauty of the old Damascan life. Shami homes are a symbol of a distant but not forgotten past. A Shami home is typically known for its wide open space in the middle, a water fountain located in the center of the house and filled with flowers, roses and home plants that serve to enrich the experience.

Today, in modern times we serve to paint the Shami Home brand in our restaurants. It is a symbol that we have inherited from our ancestors and a symbol that makes us proud. When entering into any Al Shami Home restaurant all these symbols are portrayed and exemplified in the surroundings. From the wall decorations to the hosts uniforms and worm welcomes to the generous portions and tasty Levant food. A famous philosopher once said:

“the art of cooking, like other arts is associated with human civilization”

The Levant kitchen, like many other kitchens has been influenced heavily by the Turkish, French and Mediterranean cuisines. This blend of cuisines resulted in what is known today as the Middle Eastern Cuisine, a cuisine full of different flavors, blends and tastes. Perhaps, some might describe the Middle Eastern cuisine as a mixture of almost all cuisines around the world.

These mixtures are all used in Al Shami Home Restaurant to provide both authentic and a culturally rich experiences.
